- Are your photographs available for sale?
- My pictures are not available for sale.
However, I frequently give away prints of my photographs to website visitors.
It is possible to win my photos by signing up for the
Moment Ends mailing list.
You can also trade for pictures. In general, I will trade photos for
other photos, videos, posters, or any other interesting Phish or other memorabilia.
In particular, I will definitely trade photos for Jim Pollack posters and artwork.
Make me an offer!
- Can I use your photographs to make CD-R cover artwork?
- Please! I would love for all CD jewel case artists to use my
photos!
In return, I would appreciate a link from the web page hosting
the artwork to The Moment Ends Photography. Also, please let me know if and when you use my
photos in CD case artwork so I can add a link from this site to yours.
If you have other questions about image usage, please see the copyright notice
or contact me.
- What camera and equipment do you use?
- I use an Olympus IS-3 automatic camera
to take pictures in the show. It has a zoom lens that goes from 35mm to 180mm.
The ideal concert camera needs an extremely fast lens because of the low lighting. My camera's
lens is not particularly fast, but because I must sneak it into shows
I compromise. This camera is actually a great compromise, it's relatively small, with no interchangeable lenses,
it zooms pretty far, and it's as fast an SLR as you can get.
- How do you sneak your camera into shows?
- I usually wrap a bunch of sweatshirts around it and stuff it in my
backpack underneath a lot of other junk. That way when the
security feels the bottom of the bag, it is soft. And when they
look in the top, it's a real pain in the ass for them to find the
camera. I sometimes leave a soda or water on the top for them
to find. Usually once they find one thing and tell you you can't
bring it in to the show, they stop searching. Sometimes I just walk
right by the security checkpoint without showing them my bag.
- What type of film do you recommend I use to get quality concert photos?
- I typically use Kodak Royal Gold
1000 speed film. The speed is
essential for the low light setting of a concert. I have also used
Fuji 1600 speed film but I prefer the Kodak. Fuji also makes a
3200 speed film but I have never used it. if you want your concert
pics to come out, you better be using a fast film (at least 1000
speed).
- Do you use a flash?
- I never use flash, unless I am within 3 or 4 feet of my subject
and the lighting requires that I use flash. In general, when I take
pictures of Phish, I wait for Chris' lights to be appropriate to
expose a cool picture. In fact, the more I focus on Chris, the
better my pictures come out.
- Do you stand on your chair and block people's views to take pictures?
- I usually don't stand on a chair because I
don't want to get caught taking pictures. I try to be pretty stealth and not affect
anyone else's concert experience. The idea of taking pictures is
to capture and savor the concert experience rather than to ruin it
for someone.
In general, people are awesome about letting me step in front of
them momentarily to take shots. And when security hassles me,
pretty much everyone is there help out by grabbing and hiding
my camera or by blocking security from grabbing me.
- Do you take any pictures of the lot scene or the crowd?
- I primarily focus on taking band shots, and leave the photos of friends up to others.
However, I have compiled a Summer 99 Slide Show
of lot scene and other pics.
- Why do you do it? What is your motivation and inspiration?
- The Moment Ends...but it is captured forever in a photograph!
My goal is to capture the moment of the Phish concert so that
anyone can somehow grasp hold of that moment whenever they
want and remember the experience. I am motivated and inspired
by the band, and especially Chris. I find myself more and more
(especially since I can't usually get very close to the boys)
focusing on Chris and taking pictures of his lights.
- What are the lyrics to Moma Dance?
- All throughout I gaze and glimpse you
Loving never did convince you
I see you when you're all alone
It's like a person I've not known
The moment ends though I feel winds
Blowing differently then ever before
And they're pushing me further from shore
Up the river, taking sail
Mind the skipper will not fail
He'll bring out wine, it will be fine
Just heed the order, watch the sail
